Colton Ames, a beloved friend, brother, and son has just recently been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It is a quite variable disease and no two people will have the same journey or experiences.
Although recently diagnosed, Colton started experiencing symptoms two years ago. The disease is slowly taking over his body inhibiting him from working and doing everyday tasks that we easily take for granted.
While there is not a cure or treatment today that halts or reverses ALS, there is one FDA approved drug, Riluzole, that modestly slows the progression of ALS as well as several other drugs in clinical trials that hold promise. This drug is not covered under Colton’s insurance and is costing him $800 a month, and his insurance premiums are continuing to raise.
